A financial analysis technician with the 2nd Comptroller Squadron at Barksdale AFB, La., SSgt. Joseph C. Senteno is one of the Air Force’s 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2013. Senteno excelled in managing the 2nd Bomb Wing’s second largest account, one previously maintained by a seasoned noncommissioned officer, and continued to thrive when asked to handle a second high-profile account during a co-worker’s deployment. He received a below-the-zone promotion to senior airman and was selected to present a distinguished visitor briefing to the Defense Secretary, who “coined” him for his excellent presentation. Senteno’s efforts included recapturing some $13 million in overestimated procurement costs and streamlining processes, such as developing an obligation balance tracker that is considered a command-wide benchmark. He also was able to accelerate fund certification, obligating $2.3 million within hours of receipt and averting possible mission stoppage. Senteno has completed a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting. His home of record is Carlsbad, Calif. The Daily Report is shining the spotlight on each OAY in the days up to AFA’s Air & Space Conference that starts on Sept. 16 in National Harbor, Md. AFA will honor these airmen there. Also featured to date: SrA. Casey L. Anderson and SrA. Steven C. Hedgepeth.
