The 624th Operations Center at Lackland AFB, Tex., is cautioning airmen to be wary of malicious websites after a fake site imitating the Air Force Portal was discovered. Such spoofed sites make the Defense Department’s official sites more vulnerable to exploitation and other threats, according to an Air Force release. The “unknown actor” who created the site “also found a way to elevate their fake site in the search results provided by some common search engines,” said Col. Alan Berry, 624th commander. “They are relying on individuals to trust the search engine or act so quickly that they do not recognize their mistake.” The Air Mobility Command threat, analysis, and response cell reported the fake site to the 624th OC, but it’s not clear how many passwords were collected before it was identified. The 624th issued a notice to airmen asking AFNet users to ensure they are clicking on an official link, which typically includes a “.mil” or “.gov” extension.
