Maj. Gen. Hank Morrow relinquishes command of 1st Air Force (Air Forces Northern) to Maj. Gen. Garry Dean Thursday during a ceremony at Tyndall AFB, Fla. Gen. Gene Renuart, US Northern Command boss, and Gen. William Fraser, head of Air Combat Command, will officiate at the ceremony. Morrow has led 1st AF, which is responsible for the air defense of the continental US, since November 2006. He will become US Defense Representative to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. For the Space Force and the U.S. writ large, the mission of position, navigation, and timing has become synonymous with three letters: GPS. That is likely to change in the coming years, as service officials described plans this week for a whole host of alternative systems, or alt-PNT.
