During the Year of the Air Force Family initiative, the Air Force learned that education is the top issue affecting its families, Suzie Schwartz, wife of Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz, told the Daily Report. Accordingly, one of the ways that USAF responded was by dedicating funding for more school liaisons, such that there is now a school liaison officer “at almost every Air Force base,” she wrote in a response to our query. Another lesson, she said, was that communicating with Air Force families can often times be a challenge, so USAF enhanced efforts already in place, such as the Key Spouse program. Mrs. Schwartz said she is confident that the Air Force will capitalize on the strong momentum generated during the past year “by continuing to improve our family support programs and ensuring people know what resources are available.”
A provision in the fiscal 2025 defense policy bill will require the Defense Department to include the military occupational specialty of service members who die by suicide in its annual report on suicide deaths, though it remains to be seen how much data the department will actually disclose.
