Steven Guthomson, a maintenance trainer at McConnell AFB, Kan., helped standup Afghanistan Air Corps aviation training and, because he speaks Spanish, Italian, and Dari, he moved to a forward base run by Spanish and Italian forces setting up an Afghan detachment; he also learned Pashtu and helped with NATO and Afghan force discussions. A provision in the fiscal 2025 defense policy bill will require the Defense Department to include the military occupational specialty of service members who die by suicide in its annual report on suicide deaths, though it remains to be seen how much data the department will actually disclose.
