The latest Operation Deep Freeze is ongoing with a C-17 from McChord AFB, Wash., flying passengers and cargo to within about 15 miles of McMurdo Station, Antarctica this week, reports Air Force photojournalist TSgt. Shane Cuomo. This part of the operation is called Winter Fly-in and delivers personnel who construct a sea ice runway closer to the station. The McChord C-17 force, some 31 airmen, on this part of the operation comprised Air Force Reserve Command airmen, but active duty airmen from McChord and New York Air National Guard LC-130 crews also support Deep Freeze.
The last remaining T-1 Jayhawk at JBSA-Randolph, Texas, took its final flight to the "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., on July 15. The 99th Flying Training Squadron will train pilots using T-6 and simulator until it gets T-7 Red Hawk in fiscal 2026.
