A group of US Air Forces in Europe medical personnel joined the latest US European Command Medical Civilian Assistance Program in Africa, where they treated almost 1,500 patients in Rwanda and Botswana. The MedCAP team included an optometrist and dental personnel from Ramstein AB, Germany.
Retired Col. Carlyle "Smitty" Harris, known for introducing the "tap code" by which American POWs in North Vietnam could surreptitiously communicate with one another, died July 6. Harris was brutalized by the North Vietnamese over almost eight years of captivity.
