New Air Force Academy Superintendent, Lt. Gen. John Regni, has brought back an old tradition, giving the transition rite of movement from fourth to upper class status a new look. The academy stopped what’s called “recognition week” three years ago as the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based school grappled with issues of sexual assault and harassment. Regni told the Colorado Springs Gazette that the new program has eliminated any vestiges of hazing, saying it incorporates “the good features” of the tradition.
Airmen basic rarely go on to become four-star generals, but one who did retired last week after a 42 year career that saw him rise from a lowly slick-sleeve to the head of one of the Air Force’s most important major commands.
