Air Force Global Strike Command recently launched an ICBM officer exchange program with the Navy to provide company grade officers joint experience with Navy deterrent operations, officials announced. “The idea for an intercontinental ballistic missile/submarine-launched ballistic missile officer exchange program has been around for decades, but never came to fruition,” said AFGSC Operations Director Brig. Gen. Michael Fortney in a release. “The recent ICBM Force Improvement Program highlighted the merits of such an exchange to [AFGSC boss] Lt. Gen. [Stephen] Wilson and Maj. Gen. [Jack] Weinstein, 20th Air Force commander, and they agreed.” A total of 13 candidates were sent to the 13N development team, which screened the applicants and selected the first two candidates. “I am extremely excited for the opportunity to work with our sister service and learn the intricacies of a completely different strategic mission,” said Capt. Patrick McAfee, Striker Trident selectee from the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom AFB, Mont. McAfee will serve three years alongside the commander of Submarine Force US Pacific Fleet at JB Pearl Harbor-Hickham, Hawaii. Capt. John Mayer, from 20th Air Force at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo., will serve two years with the commander of Submarine Force Atlantic in Norfolk, Va.
