The Gallup Poll reports that the American public considers the war in Iraq to be one of the nation’s top problems and has done so for the past four months. Asked last month what impact the increase in the number of US troops in Iraq has had, a majority feel the surge has made little difference or made the situation worse. A survey taken earlier this year shows that a majority of Americans believe the costs of the war in Iraq outweigh the benefits. Gallup reports that a CBS News poll taken last month indicates 59 percent of Americans do not expect to see a rise in the terrorist threat here in the US should it withdraw American troops from Iraq. Only 30 percent believe the threat would increase.
