Flying the J model Hercules has reduced the number of aircrew needed by the 53rd WRS and the time it takes for airmen of AFRC’s 403rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to service the weather birds. The C-130J requires less crew members than the H model, leaving the 53rd’s flight engineers looking for jobs with units still flying older models. “I’m going to miss flying into storms the most,” says flight engineer CMSgt. Steve Riley. On the flip side, ground crew can service the J model “60 percent faster” than an H model, says mechanic MSgt. Ronnie Kipp, who has maintained three generations of C-130s.
The last remaining T-1 Jayhawk at JBSA-Randolph, Texas, took its final flight to the "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., on July 15. The 99th Flying Training Squadron will train pilots using T-6 and simulator until it gets T-7 Red Hawk in fiscal 2026.
