The Pentagon’s Inspector General has been keeping close watch on the progress of a Congressionally mandated Mental Health Task Force, states an IG release. The task force, comprising seven DOD members and seven non-DOD members, has been charged to scrutinize measures to provide adequate mental health care to veterans of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The task force report is due to the Secretary of Defense in May 2007.
With a fresh directive from the president, the department could opt to repeat its unconventional—and potentially unlawful—move to pay troops using unused non-personnel appropriations.
