Hickam AFB, Hawaii apparently will be first in line to produce hydrogen fuel for the Air Force and other DOD customers, forming a partnership with the state in the form of a joint green energy initiative that makes the venture the center of excellence for hydrogen research for DOD and Hawaii. Just last month, the base opened the Air Force’s first hydrogen production and fuel station.
The emphasis on speed in the Pentagon’s newly unveiled slate of acquisition reforms may come with increased near-term cost increases, analysts say. But according to U.S. defense officials, the new weapons-buying construct provides the military with enough flexibility to prevent runaway budget overruns in major programs.
