The Air Force’s Senior Focus Group on Energy received a Presidential Award for Leadership in Federal Energy Management on Nov. 2. In 2006, USAF once again was the largest purchaser of green power in the federal government, and the group issued seven policies to reduce energy consumption further. It was also behind the service’s push to utilize synthetic fuel for aircraft. Other energy awards, these from the Energy Department, included a gold award to Kirtland AFB, N.M., for the highest score in energy efficiency, cost savings, innovation, and other criteria.
As Air Force leaders consider concepts of operations for Collaborative Combat Aircraft, sustainment in the field—and easing that support by using standard parts and limiting variants—should be a key consideration, according to a new study from AFA's Mitchell Institute of Aerospace Studies.
